About the event
Moving from the collective practices of remix and appropriation explored in the previous chapter, this third screening turns towards the construction of subjectivity in digital culture. Bringing together works by Valerye Leya, Jacob Schill and Elisa Giardina Papa, alongside an installation by JODI, the programme explores how images, interfaces and online behaviours shape the ways we perceive ourselves and relate to others.
From cringe and self-exposure to intimacy, emotional labour and digital identities, these works investigate the increasingly blurred boundaries between personal experience and its technological mediation. Rather than simply representing our inner lives, digital environments actively participate in producing them.

Artist
VALERYE LEYA Powers of Cringe - 16 min Exploring cringe as an emotional and cultural phenomenon, the work examines the discomfort of witnessing others' self-expression and the social expectations that shape online behaviour. Through questions of embarrassment, exposure and identification, cringe emerges as a revealing expression of how digital culture influences the ways we perform, perceive and judge ourselves and others. ELISA GIARDINA PAPA Technologies of Care (2016) - 24 min 47 sec Investigating the relationship between technology, intimacy and labour, Technologies of Care examines the increasingly invisible forms of emotional and affective work mediated by digital platforms. Through the experiences of online workers, the project questions how care, empathy and human connection are transformed into services within contemporary digital economies. JACOB SCHILL EM Assumes Death (2025) - 30 min Exploring the construction and fragmentation of identity within digital environments, EM Assumes Death reflects on the unstable boundaries between the self and its technological representations. The work raises questions about presence, absence and the ways digital spaces shape our understanding of individuality and personal experience.
INSTALLATION JODI - SOD Through the disruption and manipulation of digital interfaces, JODI's practice exposes the systems and conventions that structure our interactions with technology. Their work challenges the apparent neutrality of digital environments, revealing the unstable relationship between users, images and the interfaces through which they experience the world.
