4x4

About the event

4x4 is a new festival format that takes place on the last weekend in April parallel to Gallery Weekend at panke.gallery and Panke Club. It brings together ~40 artists from the Berlin art scene in an experimental festival of music, performance and club culture in 10+ randomly assembled new bands.

The panke.gallery, located in panke club, connects different social and cultural circles of Berlin's pop culture and art scene. It connects music culture, visual, performative and media arts.

The last two (pandemic) years have been characterized by a mélange of artistic isolation and precarious situation, from which anxiety and often physical overload have developed. With the festival 4x4 we counteract this and create the framework for a career-free artistic work in a safe social space. The invited artists know each other from many encounters at exhibition openings, panel discussions, screenings, performances or sound nights that we have organized in recent years. In 4x4 we use calculated chance as a formative force by selecting ~40 artists from the 196 artists of the panke.gallery and the more than 300 artists of the Panke Club to collaborate in 10+ randomly assembled band projects since January. Thus, the project is of course also a social experiment. Beyond the two working months and the two event days, the project will lead to "intimate" connections between the individual artists. As curators, we consider these relationships to be extremely important, especially today, as they lay the foundation for solidary, political action and often make it possible in the first place.

During the one day of the festival, the 10+ band projects will present works created in these new constellations, which include diverse media forms such as net art, sound art, media, video and performance art.
