AICON: Collective Icon-Making in the Algorithmic Age
Workshop with Tommaso Cappelletti & Jumoke Fernandez
Esoteric Algorithms & Re-enchanted Technologies

About the event
✦ How do we picture artificial intelligence? ✦
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the hidden power of icons, symbols, and metaphors that shape our collective imagination of AI. Drawing on AICON’s evolving archive of AI iconography sparkles, wands, and glowing orbs stand in as enchanted symbols of complex systems, we will explore how these metaphors shape cultural imaginaries and mask the material realities of technology.
Through drawing exercises and metaphor exploration, we will imagine new speculative icons that can question how design encodes ideology, labor, and belief into everyday interfaces. This workshop invites artists, designers, and researchers to engage critically and creatively with the aesthetics of the algorithmic age, reimagining what a more transparent, responsible, and poetic visual language of AI might look like.
